Oral Health ABCs: Cold and Flu Season

Posted .

Did you know that taking care of your teeth and gums while you’re sick is extremely important? Although you may find yourself struggling with effective oral health care while you are sick, it is important to do what you can to prevent further damage to your teeth and gums.

If you’re using any form of cough drops or other lozenges while you are sick, remember to exercise caution and not bite into the drop. Doing so can easily chip or crack your teeth. Furthermore, try to use lozenges that are sugar-free. Even cough drops that contain sugar can slowly damage your teeth.

If you happen to be sick and vomit, do not try to immediately clean your mouth with a brush. Using brushes and toothpaste may be too abrasive on your tooth enamel immediately after a sickness. Instead, try using sugarless gum or mouthwash. Furthermore, never share your toothbrush with anyone, or use someone else’s toothbrush, as doing so can lead to contamination. Furthermore, it is highly recommended to replace your toothbrush after having a cold or the flu.
